About teaching that phone number....

I got this suggestion from our son's VB trainer:
First, teach the NUMBER:
1. Write each digit of the number on a separate index card. Lay the cards out in order with each number showing.
2. Point at and say each number (e.g., "7035551212") with your child.
3. When he can rattle off all the numbers easily, turn the last card face down (e.g., 703555121X), then repeat the pointing and reciting.
4. Continue in this way until the child can recite the number without the visual cue.
THEN, teach the FUNCTION:
1. Say, "Your phone number is 7035551212", and point to the cards.
2. Ask the child, "What is your phone number?" If he doesn't answer after a few seconds, supply the answer.
3. Keep doing this until he can answer immediately.
4.  Practice without prompts intermittently to ensure fluency and retention.

NOTE: Vary the way you ask the question (e.g., "Can you tell me your phone number?" "What's your telephone number?" "Do you know your phone number?") so that the child doesn't associate it with a single rote question.
